Cleansing UpdateAs clients embark on a cleansing program or after a cleansing program, I often get the question about what would be the most important dietary change to make or keep. My opinion is to be watchful of added chemicals in our food. These chemicals are more harmful than you might think. We often are led to believe they are safe since the amount in the food is so small - and this amount has been "proven" to be safe for human consumption. The problem is this - in one serving of one food that is probably true. Many people shop innocently believing they are getting healthy foods not realizing even these contain chemicals. Between the packaged foods and restaurant or fast-foods, we may be consuming far more than what was ever "tested" to be safe. Add this to the fact that many of the vitamins or supplements we take will also contain additives and you can see how it easily adds up. These chemicals and food additives can cause many problems from low thyroid, cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure to just plain old making or keeping you fat. Just to give you some perspective, I have had a number of clients bring in their bag of supplements they are taking in their attempt to stay or get healthy. After eliminating all the supplements with fillers they will often lose 5 pounds! So if you must choose one dietary change to make - make it this... cut out or cut down on foods with additives and chemicals. Keep your foods whole and as unprocessed as possible. Whole fruits and veggies, grains that you cook yourself, free-range organic meats and poultries and if you must eat out or on-the-run, try the lunch counter at a local health food store. This whole process becomes easier as you become more aware of the foods you are eating. You might be surprised at the difference it can make in the way you feel and look! Let Food be Your MedicineCabbage is avoided by many because of it's reputation for causing flatulence. But what you might not know is that cabbage has many health benefits whether it is eaten raw, lightly steamed, juiced or fermented!Cabbage is rich in fiber and Vitamins A, C, E and B along with high levels of iron and sulpher (necessary for cleansing and skin integrity). It has been proven to help the body heal ulcers and kills certain virus and bacteria and boosts the immune system by helping the body to make more antibodies. Featured RecipeFresh Chinese Cabbage SaladUse as much or as little of the following ingredients to your liking: Finely Chopped Cabbage (use Chinese cabbage or another green cabbage if you like) Chopped scallion soaked Hijiki Seaweed Tomatoe slices with pulp and seed removed Mix the above ingredients with about 1 teaspoon of fresh, grated ginger, 1-2 cloves of pressed garlic, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 Tablespoon of soy sauce, pinch of dry mustard, olive oil, salt and pepper. Toss all these together and sprinkle with sesame seeds. NOTE: Rinse and soak the seaweed for about 10 minutes in warm water until softened. Drain and squeeze out excess water before using. Diet and Motivation TipsAvoid chemicals and food additives. Eat fresh, whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.I will be sending out a link before the next "regular" newsletter for those who want to order the book "FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper's Guide to What's Safe and What's Not!" For those who don't know - this is a pocket or purse sized book that rates food additives and informs you which are poorly tested, unsafe, what they do to your body and which ones may only cause allergic reactions. Very helpful to carry when shopping - even for those "in the know." Ask A QuestionCan I get this cleansing information written down ?Yes - I finally did it. In response to the many clients for the past 10 years, and after much resistance on my part, I finally completed writing a book called "The Springclean Cleanse - The Manual for Cleansing and Detoxification." It is a manual that includes much of the information on this site and more. (I wrote it after having many clients - including nutritionists, chiropractors and doctors - ask for my information in written form so they could more easily share with friends or pass on to clients.) I resisted writing it because I felt I gave enough free info, but I never understood how much info there was until I wrote it down! So, I will be offering an e-book version at a discount to readers before the actual print-launch (which I will also offer at a discount to readers). I am in the process of putting the book to the software for easy downloading. As soon as it is ready, I will send all of you an email on how to order it. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
